ISRO's big revelation on Himalayan lakes, fear of danger expressed

A large number of glaciers are present in the Himalayan mountains, hence it is also called the world's third pole.

But due to global warming, this area is being greatly affected, the snow is continuously melting and the glaciers are shrinking.

Due to the rapid melting of glaciers, water accumulates at many places in the mountains, which are called glacial lakes.

Due to the addition of water, the size of old glacial lakes in the Himalayas is increasing, which can prove dangerous.

These glacial lakes pose a risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFS)

The accidents that took place in Kedarnath, Chamoli, and Sikkim were also a result of this, due to which there is a risk of flash floods and landslides in low-lying areas.

These glacial lakes erupt when a heavy object falls into them or their walls break. ISRO keeps an eye on them so that people can be sent to safe places before the dangerous glacial lakes erupt.

ISRO has 3-4 decades of data on the glacial lakes present in the Himalayas, which shows that these glacial lakes are continuously receding.
