Credit card is being used indiscriminately in shopping from e-commerce website, where did the figure increase?

Credit Card Shopping: In the festive season, a lot of discounts are offered by e-commerce websites. This is the reason why people are fiercely shopping online with credit cards. According to the data, in September 2024, credit card users spent Rs 1,15,168 crore online. This figure is 65.4% of the total expenditure of Rs 1,76,201 crore. In other words, it can also be said that one rupee was spent by swiping a credit card on the point of sale machine, then during this time two rupees were spent online.

Online spending with credit card is increasing day by day

Online spending in April was Rs 94,516 crore, which was 60% of the total Rs 1,56,498 crore. Similarly, the share of online spending increased to 63.4% in the month of July. It declined slightly to 62.4% in August. It rose to 65.3% in September as online sales increased. On the basis of looking at the figures, it can be said that the online spending from the credit card is increasing day by day.

The number of online transactions is less than physical transactions, however, the value of online transactions has exceeded the payments made at the store for some time. But the number of online transactions is still less than physical transactions. The store saw 198 million transactions in September, slightly more than the 194 million online payments. In April, offline transactions were 184 million, while online transactions were 159 million. With e-commerce sales picking up during the festive season starting September, online spending has also picked up.

The increase is due to increased sales on e-commerce platforms like Flipkart and Amazon, where mobile and electronics items have seen a growth of 26%. Online card spending in Q-commerce is growing at a rate of 74% on a year-on-year basis. This is directly affecting the grocery store business.

The increase in online payments is also being supported by increasing utility payments. In the second quarter of FY25, 62.7 crore online bill payments were made. Their total value was Rs 2,38,897 crore. In the first quarter, this figure was 45.6 crore transactions and their total amount is more than Rs 1,23,345 crore.
