RBI: Even after one and a half year, 2000 rupee notes worth 7117 crores not returned, RBI gave this big update
According to the information given by RBI, 98 percent of the 2,000 rupee notes have returned to the banks. Notes worth Rs 7,117 crore withdrawn from circulation are still with the people.
Rs 2000 Notes: It has been almost one and a half years since RBI announced the demonetization of Rs 2000 notes. After that, people who had Rs 2000 notes deposited them in banks. But till now all the notes have not reached RBI. In the information given by RBI, it was said that 98 percent of the Rs 2,000 notes have returned to the banks. Notes worth Rs 7,117 crore withdrawn from circulation are still with the people.
A total of 3.56 lakh crore notes were in circulation
RBI had announced the withdrawal of bank notes worth Rs 2,000 from circulation on May 19, 2023. As of May 19, 2023, the total value of Rs 2,000 bank notes in circulation at that time was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. It came down to Rs 7,117 crore on September 30, 2024. The central bank said in a statement, 'Thus, 98 percent of the Rs 2,000 bank notes in circulation as on May 19, 2023 have been returned.' The facility of depositing or exchanging Rs 2000 bank notes was available in all bank branches of the country till October 7, 2023.
Facility to exchange Rs 2,000 bank notes
The facility to exchange the Rs 2,000 bank notes withdrawn from circulation is available at 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank from May 19, 2023. RBI's issue offices are also accepting Rs 2,000 bank notes from people and entities for depositing them in their bank accounts from October 9, 2023. Apart from this, people are also sending Rs 2,000 notes to any issue office of RBI through Indian Post within the country. This money gets deposited in their bank account.
