His family recently shared a post on social media informing about his death and said that he died due to a prolonged illness of Covid-19. This news has spread a wave of mourning in the music industry. 

The statement issued by the family said, 'His wife and music partner for the last 54 years, Gracina Lepores Mendes, has always been with him, as well as his beloved children. Mendes performed spectacular and sold-out shows in Paris, London, and Barcelona in November 2023. But for the last several months, his health has not been well due to the effects of long-term covid, after which he said goodbye to the world. His fans are paying tribute to him by commenting on this post.

Music icon Sergio Mendes was born 

Grammy-winning Brazilian music icon Sergio Mendes was born on February 11, 1941, in Niterói. His father, a doctor, encouraged him to learn classical piano from childhood and pursue a career in music. As he moved to Rio de Janeiro, his love for classical music waned and he became more interested in Brazilian and American jazz. In the late 1950s, he began performing in nightclubs as his love for jazz continued to grow.

At the same time, a new style of jazz-inspired samba called Bossa Nova was emerging, which further influenced his music. He soon began performing with small groups in his neighborhood and moved to the US in 1962 with his band Brasil '66. He gained recognition with the song The Look of Love in 1967 and the Portuguese song Mas Que Nada in 1966. As his career grew, he worked with many big and well-known artists, including Burt Bacharach, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, Herb Albert, and Quincy Jones.

Almost ten years later in 2005, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Grammy. Then, five years later, his album 'Bom Tempo' won him another Grammy in the Brazilian Contemporary Pop Album category. He also worked on the music for the animated films 'Rio' and 'Rio 2'. In 2012, Mendes received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for the song 'Real in Rio'.
