General elections for the 18th Lok Sabha are expected to be held in the country in a few months. The Election Commission has not yet announced the dates, but according to an estimate, the elections may be held in April-May. Before the elections, the Election Commission will implement the Model Code of Conduct across the country.

People often wonder how many days before the elections the Model Code of Conduct comes into force. The Model Code of Conduct comes into force from the day the Election Commission announces the election dates. The Model Code of Conduct remains in force from that day until the results are declared. In the case of the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, it will be implemented from the day the Election Commission announces the election dates.

It is important to note that the Model Code of Conduct is not mentioned in the Indian Constitution, and hence, it is not a law. It is a set of guidelines made by consensus between the Election Commission and political parties for the purpose of successfully conducting elections.

Under this, political parties, leaders, regional parties and other candidates are provided with guidelines regarding conduct during elections which they should follow. The Model Code of Conduct was first implemented in the Kerala State Assembly elections in 1960 and then in the first Lok Sabha elections in 1962.
