A tragic incident took place during a football match in Peru, where one player died and five others were injured when lightning struck during a live match. 39-year-old footballer Jose Hugo de la Cruz Meza was struck by lightning, due to which he died on the spot. Let us tell you, that this accident happened in Chilca during a match between local club Juventud Bellavista and Familia Choca.
Before the lightning struck, the referee had stopped the game because the field was overcast and the thunder had intensified. During this time only 22 minutes of play could be played and Juventud Bellavista was leading 2-0. A few moments after the game was stopped, lightning struck Juventud Bellavista defender Jose, after which he fell face down on the ground. He was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
According to The Mirror, goalkeeper Juan Choca Lacta was also involved in the accident. He suffered severe burn injuries. As there was no ambulance available at the scene, Choca was taken to the hospital by taxi and his condition remains critical. In addition, three other players - 24-year-old Christian Cesar Pituy Cahuana, a 16-year-old and a 19-year-old player - were also injured. It is said that their condition is stable.
The match was abandoned following the incident. This is not the first time such an incident has occurred on a football field. The tragedy follows a similar incident in Indonesia earlier this year, where 35-year-old Septian Raharja was killed by lightning during a friendly match.
