Both China and India have their eyes on Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is located to the south of India and is just 31 kilometers away from India. Sri Lanka is an important partner for India in terms of India's security in the Indian Ocean. In 2022, during Sri Lanka's economic-political crisis, India provided Sri Lanka with economic and humanitarian assistance of US $ 4.5 billion.

Sri Lanka's new president was initially inclined towards China, but after taking oath, he has shown positivity towards India. China also wants to increase its proximity with him, because China does not want to let go of any opportunity to surround India in this region.
