India's relations with the Taliban government of neighboring Afghanistan seem to be getting better. Some time ago there was a picture of the meeting of the Indian officer in Kabul and now the Taliban government has deployed its envoy in Mumbai. Yes, Ikramuddin Kamil has been appointed as acting Consul in the Afghan Mission in Mumbai. The development is considered an important initiative towards increasing the Taliban's diplomatic presence in India. This is the first such appointment by the Taliban in any Afghan mission in India.
What India said
There was no immediate comment from the Indian side on the appointment, but government sources indicated that India will accept Kamil's appointment. Kamil has studied in India for seven years.
Earlier, the Taliban-controlled Bakhtar news agency reported that Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry announced Kamil's appointment as acting consul in Mumbai. "He is currently in Mumbai, where he is discharging his duties as a diplomat representing the Islamic Emirate," it said.
The appointment is part of Kabul's efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties with India and increase its presence abroad. Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, the Taliban's deputy foreign minister (political affairs), also posted about Kamil's appointment on the social media platform X.
Who is Kamil?
Kamal has studied in India as an Afghan student for about seven years.

The Taliban Foreign Ministry has said that Kamil is already in Mumbai and will take charge immediately.
Kamil has a PhD in International Law and has also been a deputy director in the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
