Russian plane caught fire after landing in Türkiye, major accident averted, 89 passengers were on board

 

The engine of a Russian plane carrying 95 people caught fire after landing at Antalya airport in southern Turkey. Turkey's Transport Ministry said all passengers and crew were evacuated safely. The Sukhoi Superjet 100 type aircraft operated by Azimuth Airlines took off from Sochi on Sunday and was carrying 89 passengers and six crew members, the ministry said in a statement.

The pilot made an emergency call after the plane landed at 9:34 p.m. local time, and the airport's rescue and fire brigades quickly extinguished the fire, according to the statement. There were no casualties, the statement said.

The cause of the fire could not be ascertained immediately. A video of the incident posted by an aviation news website shows flames coming out from the left side of the plane. After which the emergency team extinguished the fire in the plane.

Passengers evacuated from emergency slide

Video showed passengers exiting the plane via emergency slides, some carrying luggage with them. The Transport Ministry said efforts were underway to move the plane off the runway. Arrivals at the airport were temporarily suspended while departures were taking place from the military-run runway.
