IPL 2025: KKR did not retain Shreyas Iyer or separated itself, CEO Venky Mysore revealed the secret

IPL 2025: Kolkata Knight Risers won the IPL 2024 title under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer. Even after this, the franchise did not retain him before the 2025 season. Now the team's CEO Venky Mysore was questioned about this. He explained the reason for not retaining Iyer.

Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore has revealed the reason for not retaining IPL 2024 winning captain Shreyas Iyer before the mega auction. Shreyas led KKR to the most glorious IPL title win in 2024. Yet the franchise did not retain him. Apart from Rinku Singh, the franchise has retained Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Varun Chakraborty, Ramandeep Singh, and Harshit Rana.

Iyer was the first choice for retention.

Venky Mysore indicated that it was Shreyas' decision to part ways with the franchise, which is why he was not retained. He also indicated that Shreyas wanted to know his price in the auction. Speaking to RevSportz, he said, 'He was on top of our list for retention. He is the captain and we had to build everything around him. We picked him in 2022 for this specific reason.

With teams like Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Royal Challengers Bangalore looking for captains, Iyer could be the most expensive player in the IPL 2025 mega auction. RCB also wanted to buy him in the 2022 auction.

The consent of both parties is necessary for retention

Mysore also said that the consent of both parties is necessary for the auction retention process. Mysore said that the most important thing for retention is that both parties agree. The franchise does not have this unilateral right. The player has to consider many things and agree. If there is no agreement due to reasons like money or someone estimating his value, then nothing can happen.

Mysore said that his personal relationship with Shreyas is good, but the batsman wanted to know his price in the auction and he supports this decision. Mysore further said- In this case, it happened that he felt it was best and we always support the players when they go to the auction and test their price.
