Cancer is a disease that scares most people the moment they hear its name. This fear is not only due to the seriousness of the disease but also due to the huge cost involved in its treatment and the long treatment process. A recent survey has revealed that 60% of Indians are living under the fear of getting cancer.

Cancer has become one of the most feared diseases in India. A significant barrier in the fight against cancer is the fear surrounding the disease. A recent GOQii survey found that nearly 60% of Indians worry about the disease constantly. It is not just an emotional issue; it ultimately impacts people's lifestyle choices, mental health, and even their willingness to take medication.

How cancer fear is gripping India?

According to the survey, most Indians have a moderate to severe fear of cancer. This persistent, never-ending fear affects people of all ages, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds. People are afraid of the disease itself, but also the possibility of death, financial stress, and the lifestyle changes that come with it. About 24% of the survey participants expressed fear of dying from cancer and 33% expressed a lot of concern about the financial stress on their family. 56% of the subjects responded negatively to environmental factors such as pollution and radiation.

How is fear affecting mental health?

Being afraid all the time can be mentally exhausting. According to the report, many people are experiencing increased worry and anxiety due to the threat of cancer. This mental stress often shows up in other aspects of life as well, such as sadness, trouble concentrating, and sleep disturbances. People who have experienced cancer or know someone who has, are also vulnerable to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Due to fear, people find it difficult to lead a normal life, which affects their relationships, work output, and general mental health.

Financial fears add to cancer anxiety.

The heavy financial burden that cancer places on families is one of the main reasons for the fear surrounding the disease. Cancer treatment in India is expensive. Many families are unable to pay for it. The cost of medical care, surgery, chemotherapy, and prescription drugs is simply too much for many people. According to the survey, a major concern for 33% of the participants was that a cancer diagnosis could lead to financial devastation. The fear of not having enough money for treatment is one such fear that keeps people in a cycle of avoidance.
