The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a worrying warning, saying that the current outbreak of the Chandipura virus in India is the largest in the last 20 years. Cases of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) caused by this virus have increased rapidly this year and many people have lost their lives.
According to the WHO, between the beginning of June and August 15, the Health Ministry reported 245 cases of AES, out of which 82 people have died. Cases of this disease have been reported in 43 districts of the country and 64 of these cases have been found infected with the Chandipura virus. Let us tell you that the Chandipura virus is a member of the Rhabdoviridae family which causes sporadic cases and outbreaks in the western, central, and southern parts of the country, especially during the monsoon. It is spread by disease-carrying insects like 'sand fly' and 'ticks'.
What is the Chandipura virus?
Chandipura virus is a type of virus that affects the brain and spinal cord. When infected with this virus, symptoms like fever, headache, vomiting, seizures, and loss of consciousness appear. If it is not treated on time, it can be fatal.
Why are cases increasing?
Experts believe that there are several reasons for the increase in Chandipura virus cases, including climate change, favorable environment for mosquito breeding, and lack of awareness among people.
What are the preventive measures?
* Use mosquito net to protect yourself from mosquitoes
