Income Tax: Who does not have to pay income tax in India, know who gets how much exemption..

In India, every person whose income is more than a certain limit has to pay income tax. Recently, the Madhya Pradesh government has decided that only MLAs will have to pay their tax. Along with this, income tax is also being talked about in the facilities given to the MPs of the 18th Lok Sabha.

After this, there is a question in the minds of the people whether MPs or MLAs have to pay income tax on their earnings and if so, then how many different rules are there for them. So let us know what are the income tax rules for leaders in India.

What are the rules for MPs?
Let us tell you that it is not that MPs do not have to pay tax, MPs also have to pay income tax. The only difference is that MPs are not employees of anyone and they do not work in anybody. They are elected by the public, so there is a different system for them. The earnings of Members of Parliament are counted as 'Income from Other Sources' and are taxed. However, they do not have to pay tax on their entire earnings.

MPs have to pay tax only on their salary, while the allowances are exempted from income tax. Daily allowance, seat allowance, and office allowances received by MPs have been kept away from income tax.

However, it is not that tax is collected from them in the form of TDS, while they have to pay income tax on their own. In such a situation, MPs have to pay tax on the salary of Rs 1 lakh they get. Apart from this, there are some allowances on which tax has to be paid, which do not include general allowances.

What are the rules for MLAs?
The rules for MLAs can be different according to each state. In every state, the salary of the MLA is different, and there too, tax has to be paid on the salary. But there is no tax on some allowances. But, there are some states where the tax on the salary of the MLAs is paid by the state government. Till now Madhya Pradesh was also included in this list, but now the Madhya Pradesh government has decided that now the MLAs will have to pay their income tax themselves. In Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Jharkhand, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, the government pays the tax of the MLAs.

Who gets an exemption?
Apart from these, the Prime Minister, and the President have to pay tax on their salary. On the other hand, Sikkim is the only place in India where people do not have to pay income tax on their earnings. According to the Sikkim Income Tax Manual 1948, the residents of Sikkim do not have to pay tax on their earnings.
