Milestones: Why are different colored stones kept on the side of the road, know here!

You must have seen different colored stones on the sides of the road. These are mainly of 4 different colors. But they are not classified in any category. These are prepared by the Public Works Department of the district as per the requirement.

The first milestone that always appears is yellow. You must have often seen yellow-colored milestones on the highway. The yellow color means that this road is under Central Government and maintained by NHAI. Its maintenance is also under the control of the Central Government. These are roads of national importance like highways and expressways. As on 4 January 2023, India had a National Highway network of 1,44,634 km.

Apart from this, a stone is of green color. You will see these stones lying on a stage on the road. This road has been constructed by the state government. It is called State Highway. The state government does the work from construction to maintenance of this road. These roads connect many cities in the same state. The total length of State Highways in India is 1,86,908. Like the National Highway, this number also keeps changing.

The third color is dark blue or black. If you see this stone on the road, then understand that you are on the main road of the district or going to the city. It provides connectivity between districts. Their length is also about 6 lakh kilometers.

The fourth color is orange. White and orange colored stones are used for rural roads. These roads have been constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. They work to connect one village to another.
