Pakistan's Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has recently revealed about her rare disease parathyroid. They claim that complete treatment of this disease is possible only in two countries of the world – America and Switzerland. This statement of Maryam Nawaz has sparked a discussion on social media. People are curious to know what is parathyroid and why it is so difficult to treat?

Actually, the parathyroid is four small glands of the size of a pea, which are located behind the thyroid in the neck. These glands discharge parathyroid hormone (PTH), which controls calcium levels in the body. When one of these glands becomes imbalanced, it pulls calcium from the bones and increases its amount in the blood.

According to doctors, people suffering from parathyroid problems can often have symptoms like weakness in bones, kidney stones, abdominal pain, constipation and mental exhaustion. If this problem is not treated in time, it can cause serious health problems.

How is the treatment done?

The main treatment for parathyroid disease is surgery. The abnormal gland is removed through surgery. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is available in many large countries of the world, in which the pain is less and the patient recovers soon. But only conventional open surgery is possible in Pakistan right now.

Is treatment possible in only two countries?

Maryam Nawaz claims that the advance treatment of this disease is only in America and Switzerland. Experts believe that basic surgery is possible in Pakistan, but facilities like modern minimally invasive surgery are not available. Due to this, patients have to go abroad for better treatment.

Maryam Nawaz said that last year she had undergone surgery in Switzerland and now she is completely fine. She dismissed rumours on social media, saying she does not suffer from cancer and does not want sympathy from people.
