Teacher's Day is celebrated every year on 5 September in India. This day is dedicated to teachers. In our country, this day is especially celebrated in honor of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on 5th September 1888.

History of Teachers' Day

In the year 1962, when Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan took over as the second President of India, his students approached him seeking permission to celebrate 5th September as a special day. Then Radhakrishnan said that instead of celebrating my birthday separately, I would be proud if this day was celebrated as Teacher's Day. Following his wish, Teacher's Day was celebrated for the first time in the year 1962.

Importance of Teacher's Day:

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan had dedicated 40 years of his life to the country as a teacher. He always emphasized respect for teachers. He believed that a true teacher plays an important role in giving the right direction to society. A true teacher teaches his students to face adverse situations and makes a significant contribution to improving their lives, hence ignoring teachers is not right. This day is a great opportunity to express gratitude for all the contributions made by teachers.

International Teacher's Day:

While in India Teacher's Day is celebrated on the 5th of September, in many countries of the world this day is celebrated after a month i.e. on the 5th of October. In fact, in the year 1994, UNESCO announced to celebration of International Teachers Day on October 5 in honor of teachers. Teachers Day is celebrated on different days in countries like Russia, Australia, China, Germany, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the UK, Pakistan, and Iran.
