Delhi's toxic air has broken all records of pollution this year. On Monday, the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached close to 500, which falls in the very severe category. In such a situation, doctors have warned that this toxic air can make not only vulnerable groups but also healthy individuals a victim of serious diseases.
According to doctors, three measures are extremely important to avoid this toxic air of Delhi:
Delhi's severe pollution level, wearing N95 masks has now become a necessity. Dr Rajat Sharma of UCMS and GTB Hospital said normal surgical or cloth masks may fail to curb pollution. N95 masks are capable of filtering particles like PM2.5 and PM10, but it is important to wear it properly. He also pointed out that masks should be changed regularly as its filtering effect decreases with repeated use.
Dr Ujjwal Parakh of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital advised people to avoid outdoor activities and stay indoors. Use air purifiers at home, especially purifiers with HEPA filters, which can reduce harmful particles from the air. He also advised to keep windows and doors closed.
Dr. Parakh said that it is important to keep the body hydrated. Drink plenty of water to reduce the damage caused by pollution on the body. Along with this, patients suffering from lung diseases should not forget to take regular medicines. Experts also said that these small measures are effective to avoid pollution, but a permanent solution to this crisis is possible only with long-term effort and strategic planning.
