Wearing a saree is every Indian woman's hobby, but do you know that your favorite fashion style can also take your life? A new research has revealed shocking facts that will force you to think about the way you wear a saree. Doctors from Bihar and Maharashtra have issued a warning saying that wearing a tight petticoat worn with a saree can cause skin cancer.

Doctors from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Wardha (Maharashtra) and Madhubani Medical College and Hospital, Bihar, after treating two women suffering from cancer, warned that the tightly tied underskirt (petticoat) traditionally worn under the sari in rural areas of India causes constant friction. This can cause inflammation in the skin. Sometimes this can lead to blisters and in some cases skin cancer can also occur. It was earlier referred to as 'sari cancer', but doctors said in a study published in BMJ Case Reports that the tightness of the waist cord is responsible for it, and hence it was named 'petticoat cancer'.

How the study was done

In the first case, a 70-year-old woman sought medical help because she had a painful skin ulcer on her right side for 18 months that was not healing. The surrounding skin had also lost its color. This woman used to wear sarees since childhood. Doctors did a biopsy of the woman, after which it was found that the woman had Marjolin ulcer, also known as squamous cell carcinoma (ulcerated skin cancer).

What do doctors say? Doctors

said that Marjolin ulcer is usually rare. But it is very dangerous. It can develop in old burn wounds, non-healing wounds, foot ulcers, tuberculosis skin tumors and wounds caused by vaccination and snake bites. Doctors said that however, it is still not known how ulcers or wounds become fatal. They said that due to constant pressure on the waist, the skin often becomes weak, due to which wounds or ulcers can form.

Do not wear tight clothes

Experts said that these ulcers often do not heal completely due to the constant pressure caused by tight clothes. A chronic wound is formed, which can be dangerous in the future. Health experts recommend wearing a loose petticoat under the sari to reduce pressure on the skin and if skin problems develop, then wear loose clothes to allow the area to heal.
