An accident had paralyzed half of his body, but now he broke the record and won gold in the Paralympics
Indian para-athletes are creating a new history every day in Paris this time. Many players including Sumit Antil have already won medals with record-breaking performances. On September 4, Dharambir Singh did this feat for India. He won the gold medal for India in club throw F51. Not only this, he also broke the Asian record with a throw of 34.92 meters. Dharambir, who hails from Sonipat in Haryana, had a bad start. His first four throws were fouls, but he gave his all in the 5th throw. This powerful throw of Dharambir gave India the 5th gold. Let us tell you that the F51 event is for those athletes whose lower part of the waist is badly affected and they participate in the game while sitting. They use their shoulders and arms for the game.
35-year-old Dharambir had nothing to do with sports. He was living a normal life. Then a painful incident happened in his life and his life changed. Dharambir was once trying to dive into the water. He jumped into the water but misjudged the depth. Because of this, he collided with a big rock lying in the water. This incident was so fatal that Dharambir became a victim of paralysis and the part below his waist stopped working.
Dharambir was going through a very difficult time after this incident, then his unhappy life took a turn and he got introduced to sports. In 2014, at the age of 25, he came to know about para-sports. After this, the Paris gold medalist turned to club throw. He got the support of his fellow athlete and mentor Amit Kumar Saroha.
Amit too had fallen victim to the same situation as Dharambir. Then Dharambir started training and started performing well in just 2 years. He also made it to the 2016 Rio Paralympics with an A qualification mark. He finished 9th in Rio. After this, Dharambir qualified for the Tokyo Paralympics, where he finished 8th.
Silver in Asian Games
After missing out on a medal twice on a big stage like the Paralympics, Dharambir has been in consistent form for the last 2 years. He won a silver medal for India in the Asian Para Games held in China in 2022. At the same time, in the 2022 International Athletics Championship, he won 2 silvers in club throw and discus throw. Now he has won the gold medal in Paris. Let us tell you that he has also been honored with the Bhim Award by the Haryana government. This is the highest honor given by the Haryana government.
