Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar on Sunday took a dig at captain Babar Azam for deciding to bowl first after winning the toss in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match against India. Shoaib sarcastically said that it was a wise decision, as Pakistan was lucky to be spared from the rain.
He credited Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill for giving exceptional starts. Shoaib also said that India had good luck in the group-stage matches, where rain played an important role and this time Pakistan got the advantage.
"I don't think it will start again. Colombo rains are crazy," Akhtar wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
"By taking the wise decision not to bowl first, we will be able to resume the game in the same conditions tomorrow," he said.
The much-awaited match between India and Pakistan in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup was postponed to the reserve day due to heavy rain on Sunday. Only 24.1 overs of play were possible before play was interrupted due to rain. India, who were put to bat first by Pakistan in Colombo, will resume their innings at 147-2 in the 50-over encounter on Monday.
The decision to allot an extra day for this tie was made at the last minute, making it the only game other than the final to receive this benefit. The decision was taken after the previous group match between the two teams in Pallekele was abandoned due to rain.
