India, who remained unbeaten during the World Cup 2023 campaign, unfortunately suffered their first defeat in the final by six wickets against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Australia, already riding high on the feat of winning five ODI World Cup titles, will now lift their sixth World Cup trophy on foreign soil. As seen in the last three editions of the ODI World Cup, where the host team has won the tournament, Australia has now broken that illusion with their remarkable win.

Rohit Sharma, who is playing his first ODI World Cup as captain after securing ten consecutive wins, was seen crying after India's defeat in the final.

The Pat Cummins-led team also maintained the winning tradition against India in the World Cup final. India had earlier also faced defeat by the Australian team in the 2003 final.

Now India is tied twice in terms of win and loss in the ODI World Cup finals. Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, India won the 2011 ODI World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium. Their first World Cup win was achieved in 1983 under the captaincy of Kapil Dev.

Australia has won six ODI World Cup titles (1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2015 and 2023). Earlier this year, Australia had also defeated India by 209 runs in the World Test Championship final.
