Looking at the future, he can be appointed captain. However, the management may be cautious about giving him direct captaincy, as it may affect his performance. Coach Ashish Nehra is aware of this concern and handing over the captaincy to Gill may put pressure on his batting form. Gill has never captained on such a big stage before.

A possible way forward:

Looking at the future, Gujarat does not have a better option than Gill. He is a long-format batsman and has leadership abilities. The franchise can choose the way to groom them, make Rashid Khan the captain, and appoint Gill as the vice-captain. When Pandya was the captain, Rashid was the vice-captain. In such a situation, the franchise can give captaincy to Rashid for a few seasons and make Gill the vice-captain. This way, Gill will have enough time to develop his leadership skills and later take charge of the team. Apart from these two, there is no other option for captaincy in the current setup.
