Internet down in Pakistan! People are not able to use WhatsApp
Both the opposition and the business community have previously accused the government of monitoring internet traffic and using a "firewall" to deliberately slow down services. The government has rejected these allegations and has also given the reason for the slow internet.
Pakistan's telecom watchdog chief has revealed the reason for the internet downtime in the country. Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) Chairman Hafizur Rehman said that a faulty undersea cable had caused the internet to slow down across the country. According to PTI, Rehman said, 'The reason for the internet downtime in the country is a faulty undersea cable, which is expected to be repaired by August 28.'
He also rejected claims that government-installed firewalls were responsible for the glitch. Both the opposition and the business community have previously accused the government of monitoring internet traffic and deliberately using "firewalls" to slow down services. The government has rejected these allegations, blaming the slowdown on a necessary upgrade of its web management system.
This resulted in a loss of Rs 30 crore
Both the opposition and the business community had earlier accused the government of using 'firewalls' to monitor internet traffic and deliberately slow down services. The government has rejected these allegations and attributed the slowdown to a necessary upgrade of its web management system. "In my view, the internet should not slow down due to the upgrade," he said. He also said that the telecom sector has suffered a loss of Rs 30 crore due to internet disruptions.
internet problem in Pakistan
For weeks, there have been allegations that the government is deliberately slowing down internet speeds to censor criticism of opponents, especially the opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Internet users claim they have difficulty sending or downloading media and voice notes via WhatsApp when they are connected to mobile data.
Rehman also raised concerns about the long-standing ban on social media platform X, saying he had no further information on the matter. He clarified that VPNs (virtual private networks) are not being blocked in Pakistan. Earlier, the business community and internet service providers (ISPs) had also alleged that the government's efforts to monitor internet traffic through 'firewalls' were responsible for the slowdown of digital services, leading to economic losses, according to PTI.
