SIM Port Rules Change From 1 July: If you are planning to port your SIM card to another company, then this is important news for you. The rules for porting SIM cards have changed from Monday, 1 July 2024. Till now, users had to wait for 10 days to get their SIM ported. But, now this waiting period has been reduced. This means that now people will not have to wait much. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has said that no one will have to wait only 7 days to get the SIM ported. This change has been made so that people do not face any problems.

What is a SIM port?

Let us tell you that the process of changing your mobile number from one telecom company to another is called SIM porting. To avoid SIM swap scams, SIM porting takes a few days. For this, earlier people had to wait for 10 days, which has now been reduced to 7 days.

What is a SIM Swap Scam?

It is very important to know about SIM swap scams. In this, scammers send fraudulent emails or messages to trap people. These messages can be in the name of a company or bank. These contain links or files that download malware from the phone. This malware steals people's personal information.

Then, using this information, hackers go to the mobile company show fake documents, and tell that their phone has been stolen. After this, the mobile company issues a new SIM and ports your number to it. After this, the hackers use the new SIM to obtain the OTP required to withdraw money from your bank account.

These new rules are part of the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (Ninth Amendment) Regulations, 2024, which were issued by TRAI on March 14, 2024. These rules have been amended eight times. TRAI has written in its statement that "these amendment rules have been made to prevent mobile number porting from fraudulent SIM swap or change." By reducing the time taken for SIM port, people will no longer have to wait much.
