Actually, Abhimanyu was Varcha, son of Chandradev in his previous birth. When Lord Krishna incarnated on earth, all the gods and goddesses decided to come to earth in some form or the other.

But Chandra Deva remained aloof and did not allow his son Varcha to come to earth. When all the gods requested Chandra Deva a lot, he agreed to this.
