If you have a bank account or use UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm, then this news is very important for you. From April 1, banks and UPI service providers are going to close accounts and UPI IDs whose mobile numbers have been inactive for a long time.

Why did the bank and NPCI take this decision?

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has instructed banks and UPI apps to remove inactive mobile numbers from the system by March 31. If a number has not been used for calling, SMS or data for 90 days, it is considered inactive and telecom companies can allocate it to a new user. This increases the chances of fraud in banking and digital transactions.

Inactive numbers will be removed every week

NPCI has also directed that banks and UPI apps will update the list of inactive and recycled numbers every week after April 1 and remove them from their systems. If your mobile number is linked to a bank or UPI account and it has been inactive for a long time, then your account may be closed.

What to do?

  1. Keep mobile number active – If your registered mobile number is inactive for a long time, recharge it as soon as possible and send at least one call or message.
  2. Update Information in Bank and UPI Apps – If you have taken a new mobile number, update it immediately in Bank and UPI apps.
  3. Keep SMS and OTP services on – Many times banks and UPI apps send OTP to your number, so keep SMS services on to get the necessary updates.

What happens if your number is deleted?

If your inactive number is removed from the banking system after April 1, your UPI transactions may fail and you will have to re-register with a new number. So, if you want to continue using digital payments seamlessly, check your mobile number status immediately and update it if needed.
