New Delhi: The government on Tuesday said it is keeping a close watch on onion prices and will offload more than the buffer stock in the retail market to stabilise prices amid temporary supply disruptions.
Onion retail price at Rs 67 per kg in Delhi
As per the government data, the retail rate of onion in the capital is Rs 67 per kg, while its all-India average retail price is Rs 58 per kg. "The government has decided to increase onion supply to obviate temporary disruption in supply of onion in some markets in the last 2-3 days due to festival festival and closure of mandis," an official statement said. Similarly, consignments will also be increased through road transport to ensure availability of onion in the market.
The government has also decided to offload onions kept in cold storage in Sonepat to meet the needs of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi etc. "The government is aware of the market developments and taking appropriate steps to stabilize the price of onion," the statement said.
In Azadpur mandi, the weekly average price has declined by 27 per cent to Rs 4,000 per quintal and in Pimpalgaon (Maharashtra), the weekly average price has declined by 35 per cent to Rs 2,250 per quintal. In Madanapalle (Andhra Pradesh), the weekly average price declined by 26 per cent to Rs 2,860 per quintal amid a 20 per cent increase in total weekly arrivals. In Kolar (Karnataka), the weekly average price has declined by 27 per cent to Rs 2,250 per quintal. The average retail price of potato has been stagnant at around Rs 37/kg for the past three months.
