New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell secured a lucrative deal with Chennai Super Kings for Rs 14 crore in the IPL 2024 auction in Dubai on Tuesday.

The auction saw tough competition between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, in which ultimately Punjab Kings had to face defeat. After a long wait, CSK took the field and clashed with PBKS who eventually bowed out of the race.

The inclusion of Mitchell could potentially fill the void left by English all-rounder Ben Stokes, who was released by CSK ahead of the auction.

In 2022, Mitchell was a part of Rajasthan Royals, playing two matches after being bought for his base price of Rs 75 lakh. However, he remained unsold in last year's auction, where his base price was fixed at Rs 1 crore.

The 32-year-old middle-order batsman has played 56 matches for New Zealand and averaged 24.86 in T20Is.

Meanwhile, Indian fast bowler Harshal Patel received a huge sum of Rs 11.75 crore as he was bought by Punjab Kings.

Harshal, who emerged as the highest wicket-taker in the 2021 season, was with Royal Challengers Bangalore for the last three seasons.

However, the 2023 campaign proved to be a struggle for Harshal, with the right-arm bowler taking just 14 wickets at an economy rate of 9.66. As a result, he was released by RCB ahead of the auction.

The bidding war for 33-year-old Harshal started with Gujarat Titans, but Punjab Kings stepped in and looked set to seal the deal. However, Lucknow Super Giants entered the race with around Rs 10 crore, taking the price to Rs 11.75 crore.
