Using skin care products has become very common in our lives. Especially in a season where our skin is becoming dry. We apply body lotion several times a day, but we are not unaware that using anything excessively can prove to be dangerous for us. While we are well aware that there are many types of chemicals present in them. A research has revealed that during pregnancy, there may be chances of asthma in babies born to women who come in contact with chemicals present in lotions and shampoos.
A university analysed data from more than 3,500 mother-child pairs to find an association between exposure to certain everyday chemicals during pregnancy and the development of asthma in children.
A study published in the journal Environmental Pollution highlighted that exposure to Butylparaben, a chemical commonly used in skincare products such as lotions and shampoos during early pregnancy, increased the risk of asthma in children by 1.54 times.
What did the study come out?
The study found that boys born to mothers exposed to a chemical called 4-nonylphenol had a 2.09 times chance of developing asthma. However, no such danger was found in girls. The research team collected urine samples from pregnant women, in which 24 types of phenol were measured.
The research team monitored the health of the children until the age of four. This was done because of how the use of daily chemicals can promote diseases like respiratory and allergies in children. Nonylphenols are known to inhibit the endocrine system. Previous studies have shown that exposure to them has recently led to an increase in diseases such as asthma. The research team said that do not directly measure phenol levels in children. He has insisted on conducting a future study to find out more about it.
