Brain Foods: Can diet prevent brain cancer?
Although brain cancer is less common than other cancers, it remains a matter of concern due to its seriousness and slow recovery despite advances in treatment. Although there is no single "magic food" to completely prevent brain cancer, its risk can be reduced by including certain things in the diet.
Dr Praveen Gupta, Principal Director and Chief of Neurology, at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram explains that diet plays a vital role in the formation of our body's cells and how the body interacts with potential carcinogens (cancer-causing elements). While no single food guarantees complete protection against brain cancer, adding these five superfoods to your diet can certainly reduce the risk.
Berries
These fruits are rich in antioxidants. Studies suggest that they may have anti-cancer properties, potentially inhibiting tumor growth.
Cruciferous Vegetables
Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts fall into this group. They are rich in sulforaphane, a powerful phytonutrient known to inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
Fatty Fish
Salmon, sardines, mackerel, and tuna are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA. DHA is important for brain function and also has anti-inflammatory properties. Incorporating fatty fish into your diet twice a week can be beneficial.
Tomato
An antioxidant called lycopene present in tomatoes has potential anti-cancer properties. Studies suggest that lycopene may be beneficial against certain types of cancer.
Turmeric
Turmeric contains anti-inflammatory compounds. It is being researched for its possible role in cancer prevention and treatment.
