Every day, lakhs of people depend on Indian Railways for their travel needs. Ensuring the safety of passengers is of utmost importance for the Railways. However, cases like the Balasore train accident highlight the need for constant vigilance. Often, while traveling by train, you may experience a sudden stop or reduction in speed, even when there is no station nearby.

These measures are taken to maintain a safe distance between trains running on the same track. Usually, a distance of 6 to 8 kilometers is kept between two trains. When a train leaves one station and arrives at another station, the station master communicates with the person in charge of the next station. If the track ahead is occupied, the speed of the train is reduced accordingly. Similarly, when the distance between stations is greater, one train gets enough time to depart before the arrival of another, automatically creating a gap between them.

To enhance safety, the railway system has implemented Automatic Block Working System. This technology reduces the need for manual intervention in maintaining distance between trains. Signal boxes placed along the tracks control the signals. As soon as a train crosses the signal, it turns red, alerting the next train. As the train proceeds to the next signal, the previous signal turns yellow. When the train passes the third signal, two yellow lights indicate that the second train can come at a maximum speed of 50 kmph.

The locomotive pilot carefully monitors the signals before proceeding. The green signal allows the train to proceed, while the red signal indicates that the tracks ahead are occupied, and the train is not far away. In such a situation, the loco pilot automatically reduces the speed of the train. This explains why you may experience a sudden drop in speed during your journey.

By implementing these security measures and taking advantage of automated technologies, Indian Railways strives to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers across its extensive network.
