Parkinson's to have 3.15 million cases of incurable disease worldwide by 2033: Report
Parkinson's disease is an incurable disease, which affects older people the most. According to a report, in the coming few years, there is going to be a rapid increase in its cases.
In the coming years, there may be a sharp increase in cases of Parkinson's disease. From 2.64 million cases in 2023, this number is projected to reach 3.15 million by 2033. During this period, the annual growth rate in the number of patients is likely to be 1.94 percent.
According to the report of Global Data, this increase will be seen especially in seven major countries – US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK and Japan – Older adults will continue to account for the majority of cases in this disease, and in the coming decade, the disease may become a challenge for countries with more ageing populations.
According to Rahul N Ravi, senior epidemiologist at Global Data, Parkinson's disease mainly affects the elderly. It has been reported in the report that in 2023, more than 90 percent of Parkinson's cases will occur in adults aged 60 years and older. Only adults aged 18-39 will account for less than 1 per cent of cases.
Men are more affected than women
The report also states that the number of men in cases of Parkinson's disease will be slightly higher than women. This difference may be related to sex chromosomes, and more research is needed on this.
Apa itu Parkinson's disease?
Parkinson's is an incurable neurodegenerative disease, which is medically classified as a movement disorder. It is the second most common chronic neurodegenerative disease in the elderly after Alzheimer's.
Symptoms of Parkinson's
The main symptoms of this disease include tremor, muscle stiffness and physical balance problems. There is currently no permanent cure for this disease, and treatment only provides relief from its symptoms.
Challenges for the elderly population
Dr. Rahul N Ravi believes that Parkinson's is one of the most common chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disorders affecting the elderly population. Since PD mainly affects older adults, countries with ageing populations should develop strategies to meet the health care needs of individuals with Parkinson's.
