In Tamil Nadu, a girl is called 'manjal niratu vija' after her first period. It is a grand ceremony. All relatives are invited. In this ritual, the girl's uncle makes a hut out of coconut, mango, and neem leaves. After this, the girl is bathed in water mixed with turmeric. After that, the girl is made to wear a silk saree.

After taking bath she stays in the hut. Delicious food is kept in the hut made by maternal uncle. The celebration of Manjal Niratu Vija concludes with 'Punya Dhanam'. After this, the hut is removed.

What does history tell us about menstruation?

In earlier times women used to bury their menstrual clothes. This cloth was used for witchcraft.

In the olden days, women were kept separate. The reason behind this was not untouchability but to take care of women during this period. They take all the food and drink there so that they do not face any problems.

Women were prohibited from entering temples and worshiping. But the reason behind this was something else. It is said that during menstruation the legs ache and they are told not to go to the temple as the temples are tall and the car facilities were very less.

Periods are considered the most important stage in the life of girls. Menstruation is said to be the time when a girl begins her true journey and takes her first step toward maturity.
