How was this month named Sawan

According to the Hindu calendar, the fifth month is Sawan. The names of Hindu months are based on the constellation of the moon on the full moon day. When the fifth month of the Hindu calendar begins, the moon is in Shravan constellation. This is the reason why this month was named Shravan month. Then gradually Shravan started being called Sawan.

Why is the month of Savan special?

According to mythological beliefs, the month of Sawan is named after Lord Shiva. Shiva is also known as Somnath and Jaldev, who is the god of rain. In this month, special worship of Lord Shiva is done, hence this month is named Sawan. It is described in the Shiva Purana that in the month of Sawan, any devotee who worships Shiva with full devotion and reverence and keeps a fast for him, all his wishes are fulfilled.

According to popular mythology, during the churning of the ocean, a poison called "Halahal" was released. To protect the entire universe, Lord Shiva consumed the poison, due to which his throat turned blue, hence Lord Shiva is also called "Neelkanth". In the month of Sawan, to reduce the effect of the poison in Lord Shiva's throat, the gods offer water to him, so that the Halahal poison calms down. It is said that after this, the tradition of offering water to Lord Shiva in Sawan started.

Why does Lord Shiva love the month of Shravan?

According to mythology, in the month of Sawan, Jagat Janani Mata Parvati kept fasts on Mondays to get Lord Shankar as her husband and she also did severe penance in this month. It was because of this penance that Lord Shiva accepted Mata Parvati as his better half. This is the reason why Lord Shiva loves this month very much. It is believed that Lord Shiva came to earth in Sawan and went to his in-laws' house.
