To prevent fraud through fake SIM cards, the Department of Telecommunications has decided to make major changes in the rules for buying and selling SIM cards. Violation of the new rules may result in a fine and jail sentence. These rules were to come into effect from October 1, 2023. However, the government extended the deadline by two months. According to this, the new rules will come into effect from December 1.

According to the new rules issued by the Department of Telecommunications, it is mandatory for the person selling the SIM card to get QC done by the person buying the SIM card. No person can buy two SIM cards at the same time. Not only this, but a limited number of SIM cards can be purchased on one ID i.e. one document. Apart from this, all SiCard vendors will have to register by November 30. For violating all these rules, a fine of Rs 10 lakh can be imposed on the person concerned. Along with this, imprisonment can also be imposed.

More importantly, some SIM card vendors are doing the verification incorrectly. Due to this, the number of frauds is increasing. The government has taken steps to stop such incidents. Also, if any person is found selling or buying a fake SIM card, he will have to go to jail for 3 years. The government has also warned that their license will be blacklisted. There are currently 10 lakh SIM vendors in India.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said, "The government has issued new rules regarding SIM cards with the aim of preventing cybercrime and fraud. Around 52 lakh connections have been blocked. Apart from this, the government has banned 67 thousand people from getting SIM cards. There is a ban on selling cards."
