In today's situation in the country, if any payment option is being used the most, it is Unified Payments Interface (UPI). UPI is being used in every corner of the country. Smartphone users are using UPI, but along with its popularity, the risks associated with it are also increasing. Due to the increase in UPI-related scams, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) had to launch a campaign to create awareness. Let's learn about some UPI scams and how to avoid them.

What is a UPI scam?

In UPI scams, people are tricked or lured into transferring money through various tricks adopted by scammers. Many times, these scammers install remote control apps on people's phones and steal UPI IDs, PINs, and more.

Fake Bill Scam

Fake bill scam is quite popular among UPI scams. Scammers call UPI users, claiming that credit card or electricity bill payments are dues and non-payment could lead to a police case. They then convince users to install an app on their phones to make payments and fraudulently transfer funds through that app.

Scam requiring instant money

UPI scammers pose as fake relatives on the phone and claim that their phone is out of order and they need money immediately. They persuade individuals to transfer money instantly to a number.

Fake investment scheme

scammers claim to double people's money in a very short period of time, often luring them with rewards. After gaining trust, they share the web link or app link, to which the person reveals the UPI PIN, password and OTP.

Web Link Scam

Scammers share links to fake websites masquerading as legitimate UPI apps via email, WhatsApp or social media. These links are used to steal UPI PIN, password and OTP.

Payment request

fraudsters send payment requests to individuals through UPI apps, claiming that they have sent you money and you only need to enter your PIN. However, instead of receiving the money, the money is deducted from the user's account.

Customer Support Scam

Cybercriminals sometimes pretend to be fake customer support executives, talk to people and extract personal information about their bank accounts. They then proceed to withdraw money from these accounts. To combat such scams, NPCI has launched a campaign to raise awareness through social media.

How to avoid UPI scams?

Do not share UPI PIN, OTP or bank information with anyone at any cost.

Avoid clicking on unknown links and avoid installing any suspicious apps.

By being alert and following these precautions, individuals can protect themselves from becoming victims of UPI scams.
