World Lung Cancer Day 2024: Every year 1 August is celebrated as World Lung Cancer Day. The purpose of this day is to make people aware of lung cancer. However, the common belief is that smoking cigarettes causes lung cancer, but this is not entirely true.
According to Sigal Atzman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Medix Global, more than half of the lung cancer patients in India are those who have never smoked. She said that there is a misconception in society that lung cancer occurs only in smokers. Because of this, people are not aware of this disease and if it is detected late, treatment also becomes difficult.
Why is this belief dangerous?
Atzman said that this belief is dangerous because it makes people delay getting tested for lung cancer. He said that if the disease is detected early then the chances of treatment increase. But if it is delayed then the situation can become serious. There are many reasons for the increase in the number of non-smokers among lung cancer patients in India. One of these is pollution. The level of pollution is very high in many cities of India. Pollution causes damage to the lungs and increases the risk of cancer.
Other causes of lung cancer
* Radon gas
* Asbestos
* Certain chemicals
* Viruses
* Family history
Prevention of lung cancer
* Do not smoke
* Avoid pollution
* Exercise regularly
* Take a healthy diet
* Get regular checkups as advised by the doctor
Awareness is important for lung cancer There
is a need to spread awareness about lung cancer. People should be told that lung cancer can occur not only due to smoking but also due to other reasons. Also, people should be encouraged to get regular checkups. Atzman said that the government should also take steps to detect lung cancer early. He said that the government should increase the facility of low-dose CT scan. Also, better facilities should be provided for the treatment of lung cancer. Awareness, early detection, and better treatment are needed in the fight against lung cancer. If we make efforts together, this disease can be defeated
