Fear of overheating? Should you put your baby to sleep wearing socks in winter?

Winter nights can be worrying for parents, especially when it comes to protecting babies from the cold. Many parents dress their children in warm clothes, caps and socks before bedtime. But a common question remains — is it safe to let babies sleep wearing socks, or can it cause overheating?

Experts say the answer is not a simple yes or no. It depends on the weather, room temperature and the child’s condition.

Why the confusion?

Babies have very sensitive skin and their bodies cannot regulate temperature as efficiently as adults.

  • Hands and feet cool down quickly when the temperature drops at night

  • Socks can provide comfort and warmth

  • But excessive clothing can lead to overheating and sweating, which may disturb sleep and increase the risk of illness

This is why parents often receive mixed advice.

What do experts say?

According to Dr. DK Gupta from Felix Hospital, whether a baby should sleep wearing socks depends on specific situations.

Socks are fine when:

  • The baby is under 1 year of age

  • The weather is very cold

  • The baby is sleeping directly under an AC

  • The baby has a fever with chills

  • The baby’s hands and feet feel unusually cold

In these cases, socks help maintain body warmth and improve comfort during sleep.

When should babies NOT sleep wearing socks?

Dr. Gupta advises avoiding socks in the following situations:

  • If the baby feels warm or sweaty at night

  • If the baby is already wearing thick winter clothes

  • If the baby is covered with a heavy blanket or quilt

In such conditions, socks can trap excess heat, leading to sweating, disturbed sleep and even discomfort around the head, which parents often mistake for cold-related issues.

The right balance is key

  • Always check the baby’s neck, back or chest — if these areas feel sweaty, the baby is overdressed

  • Choose soft, breathable cotton socks instead of thick wool unless it’s extremely cold

  • Maintain a comfortable room temperature, not too hot or too cold
