Today’s story is about a Bollywood actress who has excelled across films and OTT platforms. She made her Bollywood debut 29 years ago, and her very first film was directed by Mahesh Bhatt — Alia Bhatt’s father. But the shooting experience left a lasting mark on her, as she was publicly scolded by the director, leading her to break down in tears. Wondering who she is?
The actress is Sushmita Sen — India’s first Miss Universe. After winning the prestigious title in 1994, she stepped into Bollywood and was offered her debut film, Dastak, directed by Mahesh Bhatt and released in 1996.
Why did Mahesh Bhatt scold Sushmita?
When Sushmita began shooting for Dastak, she had no acting experience. Initially, she even refused the role, but Mahesh Bhatt convinced her to take it up. However, things didn’t go smoothly on set. On the first day of filming, Sushmita struggled repeatedly with a scene and failed to deliver the shot despite several retakes. Losing patience, Mahesh Bhatt scolded her in front of the entire crew — a moment that left the young actress in tears.
Sushmita later acknowledged that she was completely new to the craft and felt overwhelmed by the pressure and criticism.
Sushmita Sen’s body of work
Over her 29-year career, Sushmita Sen has appeared in numerous films, including Biwi No. 1, Sirf Tum, Main Hoon Na, Aankhen, Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, Chingari, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya, and Paisa Vasool. She has also delivered powerful performances in the acclaimed web series Aarya and Taali.
