How to Keep Kidney Beans and Chickpeas Fresh and Pest-Free During Changing Weather

As the weather changes, kitchen staples like kidney beans and chickpeas are prone to spoilage and pest infestations, especially from moths, which can damage the grains and make them unfit for consumption. Proper storage is essential to prevent these issues and keep these pulses fresh for a long time.

Here are effective methods to store kidney beans and chickpeas safely:

  1. Sun-Dry Thoroughly: Before storing, expose beans or chickpeas to sunlight for 2-3 hours to remove moisture, reducing the risk of insect attacks and ensuring freshness.

  2. Use Airtight Containers: Store pulses in glass or steel airtight containers to prevent humidity and air entry, which attract pests. Avoid plastic containers for better preservation.

  3. Add Neem or Bay Leaves: Include a few Neem leaves or Bay leaves in the storage container. Their natural insecticidal properties and strong aroma repel weevils and other pests.

  4. Salt and Asafoetida: Place a bundle of cotton cloth filled with salt and asafoetida inside the container. This mixture helps absorb moisture and deter insects.

  5. Freeze Storage: For a highly effective approach, pack grains in sealed packets and store them in the freezer. The cold environment inhibits mite growth and keeps the pulses fresh for months.
