AIMIM MLA Majid Hussain from Hyderabad has triggered a political storm in Maharashtra’s Washim district with a controversial remark made during a municipal election rally. Speaking at a campaign event, Hussain issued statements that the BJP has described as threatening and inflammatory, prompting the party to demand an FIR.
Rising heat during local elections
With municipal and town council elections underway across Maharashtra, political activity has intensified. Parties are holding aggressive campaigns, and the rhetoric has sharpened. Amid this, Majid Hussain, representing Asaduddin Owaisi’s party AIMIM, addressed a gathering in Bagwan Pura on Friday evening.
During his speech, Hussain used strong language to defend his party and religious identity, saying that their community would not tolerate any interference in their religious matters. His remarks quickly went viral, leading to strong reactions from political opponents.
BJP protests, files police complaint
The BJP condemned Hussain’s statement and lodged a complaint with the police. Maharashtra BJP spokesperson Ajit Chauhan said the comments hurt religious sentiments. BJP MLA Sanjay Upadhyay added that Maharashtra, the land of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, would not accept such threats aimed at any community. BJP leader Wasim Khan also criticised Hussain, stating that religion should not be misused for political gain.
AIMIM’s presence in the elections
AIMIM is contesting local body elections in more than 20 districts of Maharashtra, focusing on consolidating Muslim votes. However, political observers have cautioned that such statements may increase tensions between communities and affect the electoral environment.
