India will return to Sophia Gardens in Cardiff for an ODI after nearly 12 years as they take on England in the second match of the series. With Shubman Gill's side leading the series 1-0, all eyes will also be on Virat Kohli, who is on the verge of creating a major batting milestone.
Kohli needs just four more runs to become the highest run-scoring Indian batter in international cricket on English soil, surpassing former captain Rahul Dravid.
The batting great narrowly missed the record in the first ODI at Birmingham, where he managed only five runs before being trapped LBW by Jofra Archer. Now, Cardiff presents him with another opportunity to rewrite the record books.
Currently, Rahul Dravid tops the list with 2,645 international runs in England, scored across 56 innings in all three formats at an impressive average of 55, including eight centuries. Kohli is just behind him with 2,642 runs from 74 innings, and another four runs will see him move to the top of the all-time list among Indian batters. Sachin Tendulkar occupies third place with 2,626 runs in 56 innings.
The Cardiff ODI could also mark another landmark in Kohli's illustrious career. The match is set to be his 100th ODI appearance in SENA countries—South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia—highlighting his remarkable longevity and consistency in overseas conditions.
Despite the milestone awaiting him, Cardiff has not been one of Kohli's happiest venues. During India's previous ODI at Sophia Gardens in 2014, the star batter was dismissed without scoring. He will now be eager to erase that memory and celebrate the occasion with another memorable performance.
With history just a few runs away, Kohli has yet another chance to add his name to the record books as India looks to seal the ODI series against England.
