Delhi airport operator GMR has announced that all IndiGo domestic departures from Delhi have been cancelled until midnight. The decision comes amid IndiGo’s severe operational breakdown over the past three days, driven mainly by crew shortages and technical issues. Passengers have been advised to contact the airline directly for updates and alternative arrangements.
According to officials, nearly 600 IndiGo flights across India are expected to be cancelled today, making this one of the largest single-day disruptions in the airline’s history.
What Delhi Airport has said
The airport has urged all passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport. Both IndiGo and airport teams are reportedly working on the ground to manage the situation, although the scale of cancellations has caused widespread chaos.
Why IndiGo’s operations are collapsing
For three days, IndiGo — the country’s largest airline — has been struggling to maintain schedules.
Key issues include:
• shortage of available crew
• last-minute technical snags
• operational disorganisation leading to cascading delays
On Thursday alone, IndiGo cancelled a record 550 flights. Its on-time performance crashed to 19.7 percent, its worst showing in years.
Passenger anger grows
Thousands of passengers have been stranded, some for hours at terminals, others after reaching airports only to learn that their flights were cancelled. Many are expressing frustration on social media and accusing IndiGo of poor communication and mismanagement.
A passenger advisory was issued by Delhi Airport at 11:10 am, confirming the scale of the disruption.
Where cancellations are worst today
IndiGo is cancelling more than 600 flights nationwide on December 5.
Breakdown of major cities affected:
• Delhi – 225 flights cancelled
• Mumbai – 104
• Bengaluru – 102
• Hyderabad – 92
• Chennai – 31
• Pune – 22
• Srinagar – 10
Additional cancellations have been reported from several other airports.
How long will this continue?
Airport officials and aviation sources suggest that disruptions may continue for the next few days until IndiGo stabilises crew availability and clears its backlog. Passengers with urgent travel requirements are being advised to consider alternative airlines or postpone travel where possible.
