Pregnancy and childbirth are crucial stages in a woman's life. During this time, the body's immune system and other physical changes increase the risk of infection. If these infections are ignored or not treated promptly, they can lead to serious conditions like maternal sepsis. In this context, "Maternal Sepsis Awareness Week 2026" will be observed from May 10th to 16th, raising awareness about how to prevent infections during pregnancy and after delivery.
Maternal sepsis is a serious condition caused by an infection during pregnancy, labor, delivery, or abortion. In this condition, the body's response to the infection becomes very severe. Causes may include a urinary tract infection, prolonged labor, wound infection after a cesarean section, poor hygiene during delivery, or tissue remaining in the uterus.
Dr. Kekin Gala explained that if left untreated, this condition can lead to serious complications such as organ failure, excessive bleeding, shock, and breathing difficulties. This can be life-threatening for both mother and baby. Therefore, it is important to seek medical help immediately as soon as symptoms of infection appear.
Maintain good hygiene after delivery.
Pregnant women should maintain good hygiene during pregnancy and after delivery. Regular handwashing, eating fresh, clean food, drinking boiled and cooled water, and staying away from infected people are essential. Regular antenatal check-ups can help detect and treat problems like urinary tract infections, vaginal infections, fever, or high blood sugar levels.
After delivery, especially for women who have had a cesarean section or episiotomy, proper wound care is essential. The wound area should be kept clean and dry. If you experience a fever, foul-smelling discharge, severe abdominal pain, redness around the breasts, or unusual weakness, seek medical help immediately. Do not attempt to self-treat any symptoms.
Maintaining good hygiene and caring for your breasts during breastfeeding is also important to prevent infections. After delivery, women should eat nutritious foods, get plenty of rest, avoid self-medication, and take good care of their health. Women need to take special care of themselves during this crucial stage of their lives.
