We see colorful milk packets in the market all the time. Have you ever noticed that some are blue, some green or orange? Many people think that each company simply chooses its favorite color. But there's a whole story behind these colors. The color of the packet actually tells you what kind of milk is inside. Companies use these colors so that customers can easily determine the fat content of the milk. This system helps you buy the right milk for your needs.
Which milk is in which color packet?
A blue packet means it's toned milk with less than 3% fat. An orange or magenta packet contains full-cream milk, with at least 6% fat. A green packet contains milk with 4.5% fat and 8.5% SNF. Some companies in India also sell low-fat milk in yellow packets. This color system makes it easier for you to choose the right milk without reading the fine print. This isn't unique to India. In the UK and many European countries, the blue packet contains full-cream milk, and the green packet contains semi-skimmed milk. The International Dairy Foods Association says that in the US, the red packet contains full-cream milk, while the blue packet contains low-fat milk.
Which milk should you drink?
In India, most of us drink milk in some form or another every day. If you want a thinner milk, you should buy skimmed or toned milk. If you prefer thicker milk, go for full-cream milk. According to Healthline, full-cream milk is great for children and athletes because it's higher in vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. On the other hand, people trying to lose weight or who have heart problems should choose skimmed or toned milk.
