Milk prices hiked by Rs 8 per litre

The Karnataka government has decided to increase milk prices by Rs 8 per litre.

The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday decided to increase milk prices by ₹8 per liter. This move will make milk more expensive for consumers across the state. The state cabinet approved the increase on Thursday. Of the increased amount, ₹7 will go to milk-producing farmers and ₹1 to dairy cooperatives.

Farmers will get Rs 7 more per litre.

The reason behind this decision is to benefit farmers. Members of all political parties in the Legislative Council demanded steps to help farmers. Dairy cooperatives also demanded a price change. Speaking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, Karnataka Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said that of the ₹8 price increase, ₹7 will be given to dairy farmers, while the remaining ₹1 will go to milk unions.

Milk price increased from Rs 46 to Rs 54 per litre

The price of Nandini's basic toned milk, sold in blue packets, will increase from Rs 46 to Rs 54 per liter. The cabinet approved the proposal on October 6, but its announcement was delayed due to the model code of conduct imposed for the Legislative Council elections. Milk unions had demanded the price revision, citing rising costs of animal feed, fodder, medicines, transportation, and plastic packaging, as well as a shortage of fodder due to the drought.

Byre Gowda said, "The basic rate will be increased by Rs 8. We have unanimously decided that Rs 7 will be given to the farmers and Rs 1 will go to the union."

He said that about 10 lakh farmer families depend on dairy business for their livelihood and many families depend on this income to meet their household expenses and medical needs.

Previous price hikes

This is the fifth increase in Nandini milk prices in recent years. In March 2025, prices were raised by ₹4 per liter. In June 2024, the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) raised prices by ₹2 per liter, and also offered an additional 50 ml of milk per liter purchased. This additional quantity was later withdrawn. In November 2023, prices were raised by ₹3 per liter, and a similar increase was made in November 2022.

Milk unions had demanded a price hike of Rs 8-10 per litre, citing rising costs and hardships faced by farmers due to drought.
