Domestic Violence: The suicide of a 26-year-old woman in Ambernath, near Thane, Maharashtra, has taken a serious turn. The woman’s family has accused her husband and in-laws of mental and physical torture. According to reports, the woman was married on April 30th. The family says that her behavior changed within a few days of the marriage and she was constantly harassed.

According to family members, the woman was pressured to bring money and jewelry from her parents’ home. CCTV cameras were also installed inside and outside the house to monitor her, completely destroying her privacy. The family also alleged that she was assaulted for talking to a neighbor. She had been subjected to constant mental harassment even before the incident. Vishakha Tilkar lived for 26 years, and her doctor husband and in-laws made her life so difficult in such a short time that she was forced to commit suicide.

The couple married on April 30th. Vishakha’s family says everything was fine before the wedding, but things changed soon after. They allege that her in-laws were upset because she didn’t receive the gifts or “respect” she desired at the wedding. “She was constantly pressured to bring jewelry and money from her parents’ home,” a family member said.

He further said, “Nitin Tilkar had installed CCTV cameras inside and outside the house to monitor her every move. Whenever she spoke to anyone, she was brutally beaten upon returning home. Two days before she committed suicide, she was beaten for talking to a female neighbour. In despair, she took her own life.”

The family said that before committing suicide, Vishakha had told her mother about the harassment she was facing. They also said that her parents were preparing to bring her back home when they received the news that Vishakha had committed suicide by hanging herself. A case has been registered at the Shivajinagar police station in Ambernath against Nitin Tilkar, his mother Chhaya, and brother Ninad for mental and physical harassment and abetment to suicide. An official said that Nitin has been arrested and a search is on for the other two.
