India may soon take a significant step toward expanding ethanol-based fuel usage, as industry bodies have proposed a low-cost conversion kit that could potentially transform existing petrol cars into flex-fuel vehicles. If approved, the upgrade could allow vehicles to run on ethanol-blended fuels such as E85 and even E100.

The proposal, put forward by the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA), suggests that petrol vehicles could be converted using a specialized ethanol conversion kit costing around ₹15,000. However, the technology is still under testing and has not yet received official approval for commercial rollout in India.

The idea is to allow existing petrol car owners to upgrade their vehicles instead of purchasing new flex-fuel models. If implemented, this could make ethanol-based mobility more affordable and accelerate India’s shift toward cleaner fuel alternatives.

Testing Conducted on a Maruti Suzuki Vehicle

To evaluate feasibility, ISMA imported ethanol conversion kits and collaborated with IIT Delhi for testing. A BS4-compliant Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire was used in trials, where the vehicle ran on multiple fuel blends including E20, E85, and E100.

During testing, the car reportedly covered between 5,000 and 10,000 kilometers without major mechanical issues. Based on these results, ISMA claims that properly calibrated kits could be used for both BS4 and BS6 petrol vehicles.

However, experts caution that results from a single vehicle cannot guarantee uniform performance across all car models, as engine design, fuel systems, and emission controls vary significantly.

An ethanol conversion kit typically includes:
