In today's digital age, as online transactions and smartphone use have become easier, cybercriminals have devised equally new and dangerous ways to defraud people. These days, a new scam is spreading rapidly, in which people's hard-earned money is being wiped out in an instant thanks to a simple, unknown link or message.
If you also use a smartphone and want to stay safe, then it is very important for you to know this cyber alert in detail.
How does this new cyber-scam work?
Cyber criminals use various tactics to lure people into their trap. This fraud typically occurs in the following ways:
Tempting messages or offers: You suddenly receive a message on your phone saying, "You have won the lottery", "Your electricity connection will be disconnected if the bill is not paid", or "Your bank account is about to be closed, update immediately".
Fake APK file or link: The message contains a link or an option to download the app (APK File).
Remote access: As soon as a user hastily clicks on a link and installs an app, the fraudsters gain complete control of your phone. They then steal your UPI PIN, bank details, and personal data, emptying your account.
Easy ways to keep yourself and your family safe:
Never click on unknown links: If you receive a message from an unknown number containing a link, never click on it – even if it is in the name of a bank, electricity department or a parcel company.
Don't download apps from external sources: Always download trusted apps from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Never install APK files from WhatsApp or any other source.
Don't share your personal information: Never share your bank account number, OTP, UPI PIN, or password with anyone over the phone. Genuine banks never ask for OTPs over the phone.
File a complaint immediately in case of cyber fraud: If you or someone you know is ever cheated online, immediately call the National Cyber Crime Helpline number 1930 or register your complaint on the official website cybercrime.gov.in.
