Team India vice-captain Shubman Gill continued his poor run in T20Is after being dismissed for just four runs in the opening match of the T20I series against South Africa. His inconsistency in the format has now stretched across more than a dozen innings.
However, despite this repeated T20I setback, Gill is reportedly set to receive major good news from the BCCI. According to multiple reports, the star batter is likely to be promoted to the prestigious A+ category in the BCCI’s annual central contracts list—a significant reward and a major salary increase.
Gill’s rise in Indian cricket over the past year is a major factor behind this promotion. Earlier this year, he was appointed captain of the Indian Test team, followed by the ODI captaincy. He also currently serves as the vice-captain of the T20I side, marking his growing leadership role across formats.
The BCCI’s central contracts are divided into four categories. The highest—A+ grade—is reserved for players who feature regularly across all formats and comes with an annual salary of ₹7 crore. Gill is presently in Grade A, which carries a yearly retainer of ₹5 crore. Grade B players earn ₹3 crore, while Grade C players receive ₹1 crore.
While Gill’s upgrade to A+ seems almost certain, all eyes are now on the status of senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. It remains to be seen whether they will continue in the A+ category or be moved to Grade A due to their selective involvement in international cricket. Currently, in addition to Rohit and Kohli, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja are also placed in Grade A, with both expected to remain there.
